anybody know how to change these out on 2002 explorer awd (v6)? When in 4 wheel auto it shifts into 4 wd for no apparent reason. Happened twice in parking lots and then happened on my wife at 70 mph! I took it to ford and they didn't find any codes and didn't find anything when looking it over and driving it. They said there was nothing they could do until it gives a code or does it while they have it.
He said he suspects possibly the shift motor but I don't buy it. When manually shifting into 4wd (high or low) it works fine....in and back out. I think one of the sensors is sensing slippage for some reason. Also, my wife said that when she pulled over she was doing probably 10-15 mph and speedometer indicated 60 mph.
Sorry so long........thanks for the help.
Auto 4WD uses an electric clutch to go into 4WD. The motor is only used to shift into neutral (not available to most) and 4WLO. You can have strange 4WD problems if the transfer case fluid is low as a result of a seal leak. This causes cogging of the wet clutch. This clutch is actually an eddy current clutch which causes three ***** to climb up a ramp and apply pressure. Another cause is the wheel sensors go bad. Then it thinks you are slipping and goes into 4WD. In this year the vehicle speed is sensed by the pickup on the rear differential. Higher readings than actual seems unusual. Try removing the connector and reinsert it to clean contacts. Remove the sensor and look for metal particle buildup on the magnetic sensor. Could also be a problem with the front wheel bearing sensor.
