the overdrive light on my shifter blinks off and on even though the truck continues in overdrive. How hard is this type of short to find? Will I have to take apart the steering column to find it? Just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if it is an easy fix.
Thanks
Tim
If your light is blinking, then it's not a short. A short would cause the light to stay off, and would probably blow a fuse. I'm not sure why, but the blinking light is probably the truck saying it doesn't want to stay out of o/d for some reason. Maybe a problem in the wiring to the tranny?
The O/D light, also known as the TCIL light, serves more than one function. In addition to indicating if O/D is locked out, it also serves as a "Check Transmission" light if it is blinking. You probably have some type of electronic fault related to the transmission.
It doesn't consistently come on though? Some days it is on and some days it is off. Also when it is on if I push the selector towards the dash slightly, the light goes off. I don't know if it's related or not, but occasionally the transmission acts like it is stuck in first gear. Doesn't feel like a slip or anything though. but the light being on doesn't correlate to the first gear problem. I am switching out the fluid this week, so maybe that will help. Also how do I find out which transmission I have so that I can get the correct amount of ATF? Its a 1997 F150 4X4 offroad package.
Thanks for all the help

I have a 1997 ford explorer, and when i drive on the highway, my O/D off light flashes, when i start the engine, the light is not flashing, it only flashes when i start going around 50 mph. At that point when it starts flashing, i cannot make the light stop flashing, but it seems to shift in and out of overdrive when i press the button. please help.
That could mean any number of things. Unfortunately, there's not a lot that can be done about it. I'd try changing the fluid and see if that helps. If not, bring it to a tranny shop as soon as possible.
Have a parts store read your codes for you. See if there is a problem that the computer sees. I have had two trucks in two weeks, with shift problems. One was a 2-3 gear shift error, the other was a 1-2 shift problem. The first set a code, the second did not. I removed the valve bodys in both, and changed the 2-3 shift accumulater piston and gaskets in one as well as cleaned the valve body. The other truck i changed the sticking 1-2 shift piston accumulater and gaskets. So far so good. Just a tip. The latetest torque specs i have on the valve body main bolts is 130 in-lbs. While you have the valve body out of the truck, take a black marker and number the bolts in order that they need to be torqued, makes job a lot easyer, just go to next number. Maybe someone can post a picture of the valve body assy. There are 8-check ***** in the valve body dont lose them, and put them back in the correct holes.
