first of all did u unhook the battery for a while (15 min should be sufficent) so that the computer will readjust to the new conditions
change the fuel filter and you could check fuel pressure i doubt the fuel pressure reg would be broken or it would always run bad not just when it first started but its easy and doesnt cost anything to check
on my 88' there is actually a tire valve stem just inside the driverside door you might have one a good way to look is to get under it and look for two tiny hoses coming from ur fuel line and follow them to such a fitting if you even have one another way to check if the regulator is good is to pull the vac hose off of it if fuel comes out then u know that the diaphram is busted and u need a new reg.
-the fitting is mounted to the floor on the inside of the driverside door sry wasnt clear before
