UnderDrive pulleys.

I have been lookin at under drive pulleys for my 2004 ford 5.4 and I have a few questions fro anyone who knows.

1.How exactly do they work?

2.How well do they work?

3.Do you actually see an increase in horsepower?

4.What are the drawbacks to using underdrive pulleys?

5.Will it hurt my engine in the long run?

If anyone can answer these questions or has used underdrive pulleys in the past, please post some info.

Thx Keith

1.) Underdrive pulleys are a system of different sized pulleys that replace the crakshaft, alternator, and sometimes the water pump pulleys. By changing the size of the pulleys, you can slow down the speed of the accessories. This takes less horsepower to turn them. The engine then uses this “free” horsepower and applies it at the rear wheels. You will also need shorter belt(s).

2 & 3.) About a 10-15 hp gain at the rear wheels. The difference is compared to running your vehicle with and without the air conditioning on.

4 & 5.) Higher engine temp due to reduced water pump flow, possible electical and/or charging system problems due to reduced alternator operating speed. Could damage the alternator and/or battery and may not be able to power aftermarket electrical accessories. Probably void warranty for electrical/charging system and any number of powertrain components due to increased underhood temperatures.

As a side note many people install underdrive pulleys and do not have any problems with them. As for "long term" engine problems.... most people adding underive pulleys are probably pushing their engines a little harder than most and already reducing engine life.

Well said, I second all answers above. I have underdrives on a 5.0 stang w/o problems in 7 years, not that it applies here...

I have under drive pulleys on my 01 5.4 in 95deg heat stop and go traffic jam air blasting no change in engine temp.
Only noticable thing is power sterring a little bit tough at idle. I can feel the difference in acceleration got another .5mpg very happy with them.
Get the right puller to get the crank pully off. I didnt bother with the altinator pully it was the same size just made of aluminum.
I should have shoped around paid 185 could have got them for less at march.

I had been lookin at a set from ****** that includes a water pump pulley and a crank pully, no alternator pully. I am thinking about buying this and the super chips microtuner. After lookin around ALOT , I have come to the conclusion that these are the two best bang for buck performance upgrades you can do. IMO

So I think that when I get some cash gathered up, I will get them.
