Saturday night my truck quick "cold". Towed to a service station who says that the ECM failed. They want $250 to replace. Question, is the ECM from a 83 F150 the same as my 87? I would like to use the module from the 83 as I'm going to sell the truck for salvage.
Details: Both trucks are 302s. The 87 is fuel injected.
Same thing happened to me last week - ECM - mechanic wanted $250 - I checked prices at auto parts stores - and found they only ran $100 - $150 for rebuilts (same at junk yards BTW) - talked to mechanic and he said he'd install any one that I bought for just the labor charges. One of the places I checked the price on said "funny, this is the second request I've gotten for that ECM this week - and I just delivered it to the station today - found out it was for MY truck! So I talked to the mechanic and he agreed to install that one (rather than return it so I could buy it) for the $136 price the Advantage Auto Parts had quoted me. (labor was $50 btw + $50 for diagnostics)
So, if the $250 is all inclusive, I'd say that is a good deal. Otherwise, price replacements (get the exact part number off the old one) and you can do it yourself - it is just a "plug in".
