I posted this exact message in the transmission forum and got no response...can anyone help me out a bit?
I have a 96 Ranger 4x4/3.0/Auto. A couple of months ago the O/D indicator light quit working...as did the O/D I presume. Also it takes some time to shift from Park to drive and from Reverse to drive, I havent noticed a large amount of slipping when driving though. Could this be an easy fix or am I looking at a rebuild for this thing? Are there sensors under there that I can start with...or am I screwed? Also, if the transmission is bad how do I tell which one I have so that I can look for a remanufactured one? thanks for any help you can offer.
it sounds to me like your shift linkage just needs to be adjusted man...just take it to a garage and they can do it for you...or buy a manual and maybe you can do it yourself...best of luck
Your O/D indicator light comes on when the O/D is OFF,its an O/D OFF light. It should come on when you push the little button on the end of the shift lever.then back off when pushed again.even if left OFF,when you turn the truck off then start it again the O/D will automatically come ON and the light will go out.
Maybe the OD bulb is burned out, or the fuse has popped. You should be able to tell if the OD is working by looking at the tach or listening to the engine. Maybe the fluid is low or you need a fluid and filter change. When was the last time the fluid was changed? Do the simple things first before you replace the tranny. I doubt that the OD problem and the delayed engagement are caused by the same thing, but as I have stated many times on this forum, "I could be wrong". Keep us posted.
Well, I bit the bullet and took it in to a transmission shop. They said that it definitely needs to be rebuilt....at a tune of $1600. OUCH, that is going to hurt. I'm excited to get it done though, I really do miss being able to actually go from park to drive without having to wait a good 7-10 seconds for it to engage. Anyhow, thanks for all the advice....a simpleton like myself shouldn't be tearing into things as complex as a tranny.
