Our 2003 Expy XLT came stock with the trailer towing packing including both 4 and 7 pin connectors on the back of the truck. Does that mean that it is already wired for electric trailer brakes or does one still have to add a module up by the brake pedal to get the job done? If so where does this module hook up under the dash?
If you bought the Expy new, you should have received a wiring harness, usually packaged in a clear plastic bag and placed in the glove compartment, that serves as a conduit between an aftermarket brake controller and a plug under the dash, just above the brake pedal. That same packet should contain the adapter (tubular plastic plug, about five inches long) that allows a four-wire trailer light harness to plug into the seven-wire electric socket near the hitch.
As dburanich noted, the brake controller wiring harness is in the jack compartment at the back of the vehicle. You'll need to purchase your own controller and wire it to the harness. Then, plug the harness into the socket behind the dash. The instructions should be in the bag with the wiring harness.
Also, if your trailer has a battery, you'll need to install the relay & fuse that's in that "tow kit" in order for the truck to charge the trailer's battery.
For an 03 on there is no included wire harness. Also for the 03 on no relays or fuses need to be changed, they are already ready, even for the 12v center pin wire.
I recently installed the Tekonsha Voyager in my truck. My brother uses the same brake controler in both of his landscape company trucks.
I just cut off the factory plug and used but-splices. The Ford wiring harness can be purchased for a few more dollars if you want to keep the Ford plug.
The brake controler plug is a 4 wire one and it's under the drivers side dash.
Hi All, I have an 04 Eddie Expy. I have the 4 pin plug up in the back. My truck did not come with the plastic plug up in the glove box. I ask the dealer about adding the electric brakes & the wire plug up. They said I have to go to a company who adds the brake system. They also told me they have to run new wires from the front to the back. wow is this true ? How can I add the system on with out running wires under the truck ? any info would help
You will have to run at least one wire to the rear of the truck from the brake controller. If you want accessory power in the trailer you will need to run a second wire from the battery.
