Why does my 1987 F-150 have two of these? And what are the wires coming from the second one back? There is an OS at the "Y" where the exhaust comes together from the manifolds, is there 2 OS too?
the wires are prob to check the emmisions and to make sure the converters are workin right ... my inline six had them ... if u are goin to take the converter off make sure u leave the wires on there or the check engine light will be on...
There is an oxygen sensor (o2) before the first cat, in the little H-pipe. On an 87, there is only 1 o2 sensor, the 96 OBD-II emissions trucks had two sensors, one before and 1 after the cats to check their performance. Even my 95 only has 1 sensor. If you have a wire behind the cats, you'll have to trace it back and fine out where it goes before we can tell ya what it does, as it's not factory.
The first cat is sort of a pre-cat....it doesn't do a whole lot, and the 2nd cat is what gets the job done. We have an exhaust systems forum you should check out as well.

Actually, I have read where the 1st Cat actually helps bring everything up to optimum operating temp much faster than the single one. And it also says that cat's don't help a whole lot untill it does get to a certain temp.
