High differential temps while towing.

I recently installed a Mag-HyTec differential cover on my 2000 PSD. It has the limited slip with 4.10 gears in the housing. I also installed an Autometer gauge to monitor the temps while towing our 5th wheel trailer.

The trailer weighs about 12,000 lbs. loaded and ready for the road. While towing, the temp in the diff will reach 230 and stay there, never pegging the gauge at 250. I'm running Royal Purple 75/140W oil in the differential.

When running empty, the diff will vary between 150 and 180, depending on how aggressive I am with the throttle. I'm concerned that the towing temp is too high.....do those of you with diff gauges see temps this high when towing, or should I look into something possibly being wrong with my rear axle?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Does the lack of responses mean I've posted in the wrong area, or that nobody has gauges for their differential????

Diffs run hotter than you'd expect. Those temps don't sound out of line to me.

Is the Royal Purple a synthetic? If not, synthetic MAY bring the temp down a bit.

Casey,

Royal Purple is indeed a synthetic oil. It also has the friction modifiers needed for the limited slip differentials.
