I have a 74 f100 custom that i am changing to 3/4 ton with leaf springs. i want to put atleast a 6" lift under it, but first i am getting the stock leafs situated so i can just bolt the lift springs under it. since the steering box is on the outside the leafs are going to get in the way of the steering.i have not looked into it much yet, but i was thinking that i am going to have to move it to the inside of the frame.the steering box from the truck i took the axles from wont work on my fram. I was wondering if anyone had any advise for me on what to do?do i move it and put a steering box from a newer ford in it or what will work? some advise would be helpful
I think you will probably need a steering box off of a '78 or '79 F150 or bronco. Then you can do a crossover steering set-up. Which axle are you going to use?
I have a hd dana 44 with the big ball joint style ends. It has the set up for the steering arm on the driver's side like a chevy and the steering bar like a regular straight axle ford also. The steering box that is on it is on the outside already.I thounght that 78-79 were the same way. I am not sure. i will look for a steering box for a 78-79 but im not sure.
I was just thinking that if i turn the pitman arm around i can connect it to the steering arm on the axle it might work.I will have to see if i can, but i might have to get a dropped pitman and make a steering bar or use the on off the 3/4 ton truck?I will see tommorow if i can do it.
What year is this Dana 44 front you have? I don't think you can do a crossover type steering on it if it is the enclosed knuckle axle. If it is the enclosed knuckle the '78-'79 steering box won't work either (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
You should post this in the off-road forum, I'd bet someone there could help you out
If you want to lift your front end in a cheaper matter, you can do a shackle reversal and use your stock springs in front. (Drop you perch mounts for your springs however far done you want lift). You will have to fab up your own, but the way it sounds you aren't scared to do your own work.
I finished mounting the leaf spring mounts today and i was looking at my steering. I might not be able to do the cross over steering like i wanted to but i am going to look at it tommorow. It wont work if i turn my pitman arm to the outside, but then my brother told me to look at an old jeep that i had bought from my buddy.(I forgot all about it) It has leafs and he took a steering box and put it on the inside of the frame in front of the the crossmember and hooked it up crossover style. I will already be able to fit 35s or 36s on the truck as it sits so if I put a 2-3" body lift on it I can get a little bigger tire under it and that is all i need.I am going to see if the steering box off of an old bronco will do me justice and i am good at making things work and just learning to weld. I have my brother do my welding since he is much better at it. Thanks for the input Ramboss429
