steering problem

ever since i had my power steering hose replaced it seems like there has been more play in the wheel than before. also just today i pulled in to get gas and steering noises told me i needed ps fluid. i filled pump(over filled) and went like a dream. got about fifteen miles and went to make a turn off and power steering was gone. went down a dirt road for a little ways and made another turn and power steering was back! later was on highway and went to make a turn and felt like no ps so i jerked the wheel kinda hard and the ps worked. could this be my pump dying? also what kind of symptoms would ball joints or other steering dying have? thanks for any help sorry i wrote so much but i have to drive the truck for 800 miles on friday and i don't want to be going down the interstate and lose steering, also i should mention i have a 79 f150 4x4 400 motor
