Question engine swap

Hello from Texas, this is my first post,

I have a 1978 1/2 ton 4x4, 400 bored .030 over, 4 speed w/granny, np205 tcase, 9" ford rearend w/3.50 gear. Has factory lift, 16" wheels.

My question is I am thinking about swapping my 400 for a 300 i6, mainly for gas mileage. Just want some feedback to see what ya'll think.

Thanks, Wally

yes---no---mabey! 300 might help, then again it might not. you are talking about a lot of work for a possible no gain.what kind of mileage are you getting now? what are you expecting from the 300? taller tires, higher gears, or changing your driving habits, these 3 things will help fuel economy the most.

Gas mileage is about 7 or 8 mpg, runs great, lots of power. I have replaced 1 rearend. This truck is driven about 50 miles a day, and I just thought a I6 would give me good low end and decent mileage to boot. I don't want to lose the performance the 3.50 gear gives me.

most 400s get 10-14.
try tuning it and changing your driving habbits first.
