Today's new problem:
Drove to work this morning and everything was great. Went out this afternoon and 95Ex wouldn't start. Everything seemed normal, fuel pump sounded right, battery is strong, starter sounds okay, but the engine won't turn over. You can get it to briefly start if you apply gas, but it will idle roughly and then die if you take the gas off. Then there is a gassy smell in the engine area. I changed the thermostat and sensor yesterday, but it started and ran fine yesterday and this morning. The only thing I disconnected was the IAT sensor, but that was reconnected and I double-checked it's connection today.
I changed the Fuel Filter and PCV valve about a year ago, so those are probably okay. I also installed a new air filter about 1 month ago.
So I got towed to my mechanic, but they were already closed. I didn't drop my key off yet, in hopes that I could figure something out tomorrow, but I'm sure I won't be able to get parts tomorrow, so come Wednesday, they are going to want to know why I'm parked there!!!!
Any ideas or comments? I don't have a code reader, but is there anything else I should check?
Sounds like the fuel pump regulator. Pull off the vacum line to the back of it. If there is any gas that leaks out that is your problem. I had a similar problem with a Bronco II a couple of months ago. It is easy to replace and costs between $25.00 & $50.00 depending on where you buy it. The gas smell was from the extra gas the entered the engine thru a leaky regulator.
I had the same symptoms on my '99 V8, turned out to be the Idle Air Control Valve. Mine was under warranty, the service guy knew immediately what it was from my description, said they are often on backorder.
Yep, turned out to be the IAC valve and the air temp sensor. Glad I let the shop fix it. Guess the money I saved doing the brakes and thermostat is gone now!!!
