Manual transmission swapping

I have a 1973 F100 that came with a 360 and column-shifted 3speed. I pulled the engine and tranny. From what little bit of info I could find about ID'ing these transmissions, I am guessing I have the Ford 3.03, because it has the ford logo stamped on it.

I am planning to go the junkyard today and want to look for a 4 speed replacement transmission.. Will any other tranny from a 1970s/1980s Ford truck bolt up to my bellhousing? Or would I need to find a 4 speed tranny with bellhousing from a FE engine?

thanks

I think you can bolt any tranny to your bellhousing. I would measure to be sure, or even better, take the bellhousing with and test fit it on the tranny you look at buying. Ted

Check out these links. And look some more on this series of threads. Lots of discussion about what fits for your application.

If your 3 gear is a top-loading box, all synchro, it's a 303. Top-loader 4 speed car tranny and top loading 4 speed OD truck trannys will fit--but you have to make sure on input shaft spline, length etc. I think I saw here where truck bellhousing are deeper than cars......

Anyway, check these out:

or http://www.ultrastang.com/Ultrainfo.asp?Page_ID=4

or http://www.4speedtoploaders.com/

If you want info, this should much of and and the other postings will help.

My original 3spd is toploading. Here is a picture of it:

It has a Ford logo stamped on it, so that is why I thought it might be a 3.03
