Greetings, i have a '91 explorer, with this problem
we had a complete brake job odne on the car, but whenever u slam on the brakes, the emergency brake light comes on, along with the REAR antilock break light. AT THE SAME TIME. What does this mean? we had new emergency brake cables put in rear, everything checks out, but why both lights at the same time? they go off sometimes for awhile, braking doesn't seem to be effected...whats up?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-02 AT 04:15 PM (EST)]You can extract trouble codes from the RABS computer. However, one of the codes is "Red Brake light came on" which is probably why you see both lights together. The "emergency brake" light not only indicates when the emergency brake is engaged, it also comes on when the brake fluid gets low or when the pressure between the front and rear brake circuits is different. You can check the switch on the emergency brake pedal and make sure it's working properly. More importantly, check the fluid level and the brake lines and make sure there isn't a problem (low fluid level or leak).
A few years back I bought a used Bronco Ii from the local ford dealer. He put on new front brakes before I picked it up. A few weeks after I got it the rear antilock/parking brake light came on. Checked out the P brake ok. Figured out that when they compressed the calipers to put on new disks they forced old fluid back from the master cylinder into the antilock system. So I bled the system a number of times. Before doing so I used a sucker to remove all the old fluid from the master cylinder & put in new. Been working great for 3 years.
Before I got my 95 Explorer, I had a 1991 4dr Explorer XL. It had the same problem and I thought it was the brake lines since one of them had a hole in it (the left rear). Come to find out it was the RABS module. I found one in a junkyard off of a ranger and it worked fine after that. No lights or nothing. Cost was about $20, but a new one would probably be a little bit more. Hope it helps.
