a/c compressor

I own a '96 Explorer with 86K miles. While returning from work tonight I noticed a strange odor coming from the engine whenever I used the defrost fan. Upon arriving at home I opened the hood to find the a/c compressor glowing bright orange and the smell of metal burning.:-X23 . Now it appears as if I need to replace the compressor. Anyone have any idea how much this will set me back? I take this is not a job most people should undertake on their own.

a/c compressor

If the compressor has failed internally then there will be metal debris through out the system. Parts needed will be, compressor, accumulator, orfice tube line, and maybe the condensor if the inside of the lines look very bad. Work preformed by a quality shop expect to pay $800 to $1200.

Well I just dropped it off at the shop so by tomorrow I will know what happened and how much it costs. I will post the details so others will know the going rate for this repair.
