Hello All! First time poster, long time reader! I really enjoy all the posts. Thanks!!!!
My problem is as follows. 99' v10 SD. 95K miles. I overheat when traveling up grades when towing a light 3000lb trailer. I've changed the thermastat, flushed the radiator, put on a new rad. cap, all the easy stuff. The truck never overheats when on level ground, only on a grade. When the temps begin to rise, I pull over (motor running) and all returns to normal 1 to 3 minutes wait time. I'm not sure if the fan clutch is coming on. Would this be the culprit. Maybe the radiator needs professional attention?
I'd like to go to electric, thermostatically controlled fans. Any suggestions to manufacturer and cost? What kind of power increases would this provide? Thanks for your help....
I think that more than likely you flushed the rad for the first time when it got hot. I don't think you got it clean, build up over the years is more than likely reducing the heat transfer ability. I would at least have a rad shop check it.
Try this: With the truck at normal operating temp, have someone rev it up to about 2,000 rpms or so and shut it off. Be watching the fan blade when the truck is shut off. If it freewheels for very long at all, it's a bad fan clutch. At normal operating temps, the clutch should lock-up and not freewheel.
