i have an 89 dually and the passanger taillight (brake) works half the time. the marker light is not affected and works properly with it on or off...i checked the wiring from the back to the harness under the hood and it was alright. i am thinking there is some sort of switch that supplies the power for the brake lights and it is going bad. (flasher?) any ideas would be appreciated. thank you
you are in luck for I have fixxed several tail light issues with my father's 87 F150 and there is really no difference with the wiring than yours. And I have fixxed serveral lighting issues on the F series that ford produces for the military.
remove the tail light assembly and inspect the area around the socket you may have a frayed wire or two and/or a floating ground. I have replaced several sockets already on the tail light for my father it would seem that because the wires float or hang in the lense well, they tend to rub on themselfs an the sheet metal thus wearing out.
The only other thing that affects the tail lights is the light switch itself and that may be failing due to age and I have seen the switch turn the lights off an on intermittantly when the switch is in the on position..
i never really checked the socket, but when i tested for continunity and voltage from either the trailer harness to the harness under the hood it was continuous but no voltage. so i figure it is something behind the firewall and somewhere in the cab. and by light switch do you mean the switch for the headlights?
