460 Rebuild

The time has come to rebuild the engine (460) in our faithful old truck. It's got over 325,000 miles on the original equipment and although it still runs good and passes smog it's definitely no longer all that it could be. So I've decided to rebuild the engine and tranny and I'm looking for any advice on what I might do, resources such as parts, books, websites, what sort of moderate modifications I should consider (it's still going to have to pass CA smog afterwards).

Some specifics would be if there is a better cam than stock, any alternatives to the Motocraft carb, are kits available to rebuild the power steering unit. The mission will be what it has always been - to haul a big ole Lance camper and tow a boat or trailer, able to negotiate just about any back road mountain pass I can throw at it, desert heat and all that other nasty stuff.

So if anybody has any suggestions throw 'em my way.

Here's page one of the website that will chronicle the rebuild:

Well She looks good for 325,000 miles
As far as the engine goes, there is a lot of good info in the 385 series engine forum. It covers the 429-460 engines. A good RV style cam will give you more hauling power.

In my opinion, I would suspect a partially clogged radiator causing your heating up problems. Installing a new one is the best solution.

Enjoy the forums, I'm sure that more info will come your way.
