I've got a '96 Explorer. Recently, my gas mileage went from 17 to 12. Considering I've got 77K miles on the plugs and O2 sensors, I decided to replace them. Everyhing was great for about a day. Then I started getting what felt like a very minor misfire under load. The "check engine" light came on and has stayed on. Since then I have replaced the wires and regapped the plugs, to no avail.
I want to read the EEC-V codes (without the scanner) but can only find instruction on how to do this on EEC-IV equiped vehicles. I have the codes for EEC-V but I don't know how to jump the diagnostic connector to put the system into diagnostic mode. Does anyone know how to do this?
Have you disconnected the battery to reboot the computer so the computer relearns the new parts? I would do that next if you have not. Also be suspect of bad plug wire or wires running parallel causeing arcing between two . Also some people have had prolems with non Ford Oxygen sensors!
Your Explorer is OBD II & you will either need an OBD II Scan Tool Or Code Reader to access the DTCcodes . Since the problem began after you replaced the plugs lets start there .... What brand of plugs did you use & what was the gap ? Did you get all the plugs & plug wires secure & routed properly ?
I installed Bosch platinum plugs gapped at .054. Also, Bosch O2 sensors. As for the wires they are autolite 8.5 mm aftermarkets. There are a lot of hoses and harnesses behind the right cylinder bank, sometimes they run paralell in separators, at some point they cross. I've heard both theories, i.e., they should cross at right angles and also that they should run paralell. How critical is this and which is right?
Its up to you how you proceed , Ill offer my experience & let you decide , But the first thing I would do is remove the Bosch plugs & use the Motorcraft Platinum Spark Plugs . Ive seen more problems out of those Bosch plugs in Domestic & Asian engines such as what you described than I can recall . Spark plug wires today last a long time so replacing them when they show no signs of a problem isnt nessecary . Same goes for the O2 sensors , with only 77K miles there was really no need to replace them . You easily had another two yrs or 30K miles life left in them .
Motorcraft Plugs for the 4.0L = AWSF 42PP
5.0L = AWSF 32EE
I can't believe it! I changed-out the $4, German made, top-of-the-line, platinum plugs for the cheapie 89 cent OEMs and it runs smooth as glass!!!! Makes no sense but it works like a charm. Thanks for your help.
