Cam Tensioner-- Does it affect the 96' explorer ?

I hear all about the famous cam tensioner problems for 97 and 98 explorers, but does it affect the 96 explorer?

The reason I am asking is that I sometimes get this hammering noise, kinda like a Diesel only louder, when i first start the engine. I am torn between a bad lifter/rocker arm, a bad fuel injector, or finally that cam tensioner problem that every one is talking about. The problem is random and seems to do it in cold or hot weather. it always goes away and follows the engine rpm closely but not exactly. another symptom is sometimes it will stumble at idle, but not neccasarily during the noise. sometimes with it and sometimes not.

here are some specs on the vehicle.

1996 Explorer XLT
4.0 V6
Control Trac 4wd.
automatic
milage = ~86,000 miles

any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

Cam Tensioner-- Does it affect the 96' explorer ?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jan-02 AT 08:21 PM (EST)]1997 was the first year of the 4.0L SOHC V6. If your engine is a SOHC, vice the older pushrod model, then tensioners could be an issue. The SOHC has 3 tensioners, one between crankshaft and jackshaft, one between jackshaft and left overhead cam, and last between jackshaft and right overhead cam.

You've got a 96 so it should be pushrod, you're OK on this one.
