Hi gang,
My 96 has a 5.8L. It is my daily driver but I don't put many miles on it because I live very close to work. I have had my Bronco for about 7 months now and it feels like it may be losing some power. I get a strong fuel odor when it starts too. I'm going to start with a tuneup. I think it might be misfiring and not burning fuel on a cylinder, which I think may explain the fuel smell. I'm considering the FIPK, which I heard works wonders. I want a new exhaust but can't do it until later next year.
What other upgrades should I consider for the time being? I've seen BigRedBronco's website and it seems like the throttle body is a good idea.
What would you do under the hood and in what priority? i.e, would you go with a new TB before getting an air raid or FIPK?
A tuneup and a scan for any codes is definately in order. You should check out http://performanceunlimited.com/projectmpg/airtemp.html . You can gain more power through a drop in K&N replacement, and thermal wrapping your intake...than the FIPK. One of the best upgrades you can do is in fact the exhaust. Ive heard good things about the TB swap, but have no first hand knowledge. As for priorities, I would obviously get your truck back to tip top shape before you do anything. From there, I would do the intake wrap, then think about adding headers/exhaust. Another great bang for your buck is to pick up a Diablo chip from motorhaven.
If you do alot of short trips with your truck, especially in the winter when the engine doesn't get a chance to fully warm up, you probably have some carbon buildup in the combustion chambers and fouled plugs. Try changing the plugs and take it out for a long run on the freeway and clean it out .
