Help i need a basic idea on idle adjusting screw.... Do you think it is worth it to get a profesional to get it adjusted Thanks Paul (truck is a 1978 ,6cyl-300) thanks Paul
Gently screw the idle screws in all the way. Then back them out 2 turns. Now crank the engine and let it come up to temp. With it idleing adjust the screws "in" one at a time until you hear the engine start to bog down then back out just a little.
Yer done!
If you have a vacuum gauge, do the same thing I said above but instead of listening for the engine to bog down look for the strongest vacuum reading. This is with it hooked up to manifold vac.
I CANT EVEN GET THE ENGINE to START.....Thursday i got it to run after finish putting together.......then went back to adjust yesterday and today and i couldnt get it to run with out priming it.....and it would only run of the prime for 3-4 seconds....!!and it started leaking out the gasket on the bottom and i got them as tight so the metal is starting to shave now......I am just thinking about going to Napa and buying pre adjusted rebuilt carb......Cause i am so confused i rebuilt my old carb and it ran for about a minute then i shut it off and said i will adjust it another day.....Now it wont start .... Any ideas before i go and buy 130. rebuilt napa carb??? Thanks Paul
Did you double check to make sure everything is put back together correctly? Was the float height dead on? Is the choke closed when it's starting cold? Did you use a new carb. base gasket?
I wouldn't give up and buy a remanufactured carburetor...especially just to get out of adjusting it. First of all, reman. carbs can bring about more trouble than you had to begin with. And second, you probably can't just bolt it on and go...you'd have to tune it anyway. Every engine is different, and the differences increase with age, and the idle mixture\idle speed screws could be set at anything, so you're probably gonna end up adjusting the new one just as much.
the choke i dont think closes by itself i will check it out soon with that climatic choke.......and the float is dead on from the rim where the gasket touches....but with no gasket on while measuring is that the right place to measure....1"5/8 is the measurement i have had...???and i have had my grandfather hold down the choke just to make sure. Maybe the float is measured from a different spot? Fuel pump has not died and the fuel filter has less then 50 miles on it... and i have all new gaskets on anything having to do with manifolds or carbueration......it leaks out the front on the thickest gasket second from bottom....cant think of anything else ....is it alright to use permetex on that leaky area?-Paul
