Being a hole snipe (engine room) in the Navy, we thought of bosun's mates as knuckle-dragging deck apes. "If the snipes don't groove, the ship don't move." Bosun' s mates mainly chip paint and tie knots, from what I saw. These comments are somewhat biased, obviously. A holdover from sailing ship days, when every sailor was a bosun's mate.

Boatswain, (pronounced bo'sun)
from the saxon word swein, which means boy or servant. it is his/her responsibility to assure that all equipment "on deck" ie anchor,rigging,sails,ect functions properly and have suitable spare parts. inspite of the name, the ships boats are not usually his responsibility.

So I guess when I worked for (name withheld to protect the not so innocent) we were'nt so far off in refering to them as "Paint Chippers".
I also understand now that it's "Able SEAman". No wonder I got those looks at the Urologist.
