I am running a 1965 Ford f100 with a 390 and Edelbrock #1405, Manual Choke, 600cfm Carburetor. It now hesitates when you first accelerate for a few seconds and then take off ok but is weak going into the next gear. I replaced the pump on the carb. but that didn't fix it. Any ideas?
Sure sounds like an accelerator pump, but if you've already replaced it.... I had an RX7 recently that had the same problem. A friend of mine came over and adjusted the accelerator pump. I'd never heard of doing that before, but hey, it was an RX7. Looking under the hood was like looking at a naked woman. I get confused and don't really know how it works. Maybe that Edelbrock has an adjustable pump, too.
I am having some of the same issues with my 1406. I have dropped down two jet sizes and one metering rod. The only time there is a problem is getting back on the gas. Once moving no problems. We have changed the accelerator pump as well, and couldn't see any problems with the one removed.
Move the pump drive link one hole closer to the carb body and see if that helps. It will increase the stroke of the accelrator pump. If not, I suspect an intake maifold leak or carb base gasket leak. These carbs generally work great right out of the box with only minor air bleed adjustments.
I am assuming your using a stock 390 intake and all you changed was the carb?
