While crusing at about 65 empty it will Like you pused in the clucth and rev to about 3000 and then in a second come back in. It did it about 3 times today on a 250 mile trip. Any help would be appericated. Thanks.

Did you check the fluid level? Sounds like a torque converter problem to me.

I think it shifts a little hard into second,Is that sensor something I can change? Talked to a transmission shop today and he siad sounded like it was loosing preasure and needed a rebuild 1300.00! I drove 60 miles today and it did not happen once? Could it hve crud in the trans that repacling the filter and fluid would help? Thanks For the help!!! I just bought the truck and a trans is not in my budget.

My truck shifted hard like it had a massive shift kit, plus the rpm's would jump up and down ta highway speeds. Talked to Ford dealer, and this site. The fipl sensor tells the tranny when to shift based on how much load you have hooked on the back. Checked mine with an ohm meter, when I depressed the throttle I lost any juice going through it. Ordered new sensor from dealer $45-$55 set it at 1 ohm with throttle in idle position, and everything was fine. It is hooked to the throttle on the back side of the IP, two screws hold it on, three wires go into it. Test it by unpluging it, and checking the ohm's between the top and middle prongs. BTW, I tried changing fluid/filter and didn't help.

I had thought it was going into netural, but it is probably down shifting to too low a gear and the reves shoot way up. How do you set the sensor, I think this sounds like the problem . Thanks

There are 2 screws that hold it to a bracket, then 2 screws that hold the bracket to the pump. If you look at it, the bracket will pivot on the screws. The factory fills the heads of these with apoxy, so to loosen or tighten them the apoxy has to be burnt out with a mini torch.

I had the exact same thing happen to my 94 f350 CC turbo. This is what I did.....

FIRST thing to check is the VSS, or vehicle speed sensor.
It is located in the top front of the rear dif. Has a wire or two going to it in a harness. Undo the bolt holding it in, remove the wiring harness and then gently pry it out with a flat head screw driver.

Clean all the metal filings (or rust, or junk) off it, then replace it snug. IF you need a new one (When I pulled mine out, it was completely rotten and came apart in my hands) it will cost you about $23 CDN at the ford dealer.

To replace it snug, I usually push it in by hand, start the bolt, then lay a screw driver across the top of it and gently tap it in with the socket wrench I used to take it off with. _ these are tools i keep in my glove compartment specifically for this, as I clean this often (diff has a lot of rust after not running for 10 months).

After I did this, the hard shifting went away for about a day or so, I then rechecked the sensor, and it had picked up filings again. After a cleaning again, it ran great. I now have to clean it less frequently, every time. Yes, I also flushed the rear dif, replaced with synthetic and posi additive.

One thing to note is I have heard of tranny shops seeing this problem, saying it needs a rebuilt tranny and as part of the rebuilt tranny, they will replace that sensor. I have heard one shop even ONLY replaced the sensor....

Does you OD off light blink on and off as well?

Chad
