Universal Joint Removal?

My first post on this site, so lets see how you guys do. My 90 F350 just started making chirping noises today, so I have a real strong feeling that the universals are done. I'm familiar with the removal of the universal joints that use the metal straps and nuts. The universal that hooks up to the tranny does not have any straps to unbolt. I'm guessing that you remove the clips on all sides and tap on each side to compress the u-joint? What about when you have to put the new one in? Any help in the removal and install of these u-joints would be greatly appreciated.

Take it off the rear end first, then pull the carrier bearing (if it has one), then slide it out of the tranny. It might leak a little so put a pan under it. It's still a pain to work on, but at least it's out from under the truck.

I use a vise and two sockets one small socket to press the u-joint through the yoke and a large socket to catch the cap on the other side. To install you remove one cap and put it in one hole in the yoke, then take the other cap and install it from the inside with the cross attached, and press the removed cap through in the same way. Once you have the snap rings installed put one side of the yoke on an anvil and bang the other side with a hammer, this compresses and then releases it to move both caps out against the snap rings, then the cross is not pinched between them.

I just did a full set on a 1990 4X4 and "barrowed" the c-clamp tool from O'Reillys Auto Parts. It made the removal and installation easy...no banging or pounding.
