reading the OBD2 codes`

Hello all,
I have a 96 Exploder V8 and am getting the 'check engine light'.
I heard that I could short out some wires on the connector and read the code via the blinking light sequence on the dash board...
Can anyone help me with this ??

Youve got an OBD II System that can only be scanned with a OBD II Scan Tool or Code Reader .
