Glad to be of help. There are a great bunch of guys on this forum. I am not a "chat room", type of guy but I really appreciate the info you get here. And by the way, I would love to put a FE 4 barrel on but winter is not far off and the roof needs mending if you know what I mean. Hopefully I can pick one up at the "yard" with an original Holley for futur purposes! Good luck!
Okay pulled the crank today. Miked the main journals. According to the book they should be a 2.7 and some change. I am getting 2.8 and some change. I am very confuesed. How can my main journal size be larger then the specs? You would think that they would be worn down and of course smaller. I dont know maybe im just an ametuer or something.
Thanks for the help.
yup I am. I talked to a speed shop and they conculded that my brand new micormeter is inaccurate. So I guess my harbor frieht model isnt going to cut it and I need a higher quailty one. Darn.
That center main (thrust bearing), can really be stubborn. A little spray of blaster won't hurt anything. Be patient, you will get it out of there!
Just an idea:
Either the thrust area on the crank and the thrust bearing surface itself are not worn and are still VERY tight, or the crank has worn in the thrust area and there is a step interfering with the bearing and keeping the crank in the block.
Check out end-play on the crank, maybe put it back in with the original bearings and check it with a dial guage (rental).
I think you can get oversized #3 main bearings, but oversized in the thrust area, and the crank can get cut and or welded to build up the thrust area.
However if the thrust area is too worn, you could probably just use a 360 crank and be done with it. Not sure how rare 352 cranks are - 1U?
So what kind of shape is the rest of the engine in?
You need a "good" mic or you might as well use a ruler !!! Discout stuff has it's place but not for accuracy!
Yeah I learned my lesson. Sometimes I go cheap on stuff and it backfired this time. Well as far as the rest of the engine, I got the crank out easily by just pulling directly upwards. There is no rear main seal at all. Its simply non-existent. There was a foot of grease on my bellhousing that took me several hours with the pressure washer to get off. Thank God for pressure washers. I have not had anytime to check the bores or anyhing. I have not been able to work on my truck hardly at all with all the crap that needs to be taken care of around here. I hate the fact that my engine is all over the garage in pieces and my truck is useless. I cant wait to get it back together and burn up some new rubber with my mods!
At least you have it started. Some guys just talk about doing it someday and never get around to it. Cleaning parts can take for ever if you do a good job. Holding those nice old clean parts in your hands is definately worth it though. Just try to go to a parts store and find something that looks and feels even close!
Yeah my engine was really abused throughout its life and you can tell. The inside of the engine is gunked up with sludge from a moron who never maintated it.ARRRRGH I cant stand people that dont maintain equipement. The outsidse of the engine was so gunked up everywhere it takes hours and hours of scrubbing to get it clean. Your right about it though when the old part is all cleaned and painted in Ford blue its really nice. Its beauitfuil. Im getting there, once I have everything measuared and whatnot then its just assembly time and wont be long. Im gland I dont have to clean the intake, its very scary. Inside and out.
I spent more time on the intake than any thing else. I must admit though, that now that it has been cleaned up and painted, it sure looks sweet. Make sure you get the right "Ford Blue", paint. After all your work you want it to look good!!

If it's an original motor, never been touched, remember one thing. Oil back then didn't have detergents in it (or not very good ones), so they tended to sludge up everything no matter how many times you changed it. Lots of parrafin too, which is basically candle wax, hence the sludge...
Good luck with it!
Darn, now you have me wanting to take some '67 FE parts and paint them just to hang on the wall...
Oh yeah one more thing I forgot. The timing gears were worn down severly. The timing chain had a ton of slack in it. I wonder if its ever jumped? Its really loose, but Im repalcing that with a comp cams roller timing set
Sounds like you are headed down the right path. If something is too worn, just replace it. Don't wait for a better time. I trust you are replacing the oil pump as well!
