Replaced the power steering pump on my 96 4l ext. The new one appears to leak from the plastic reservoir, where it slides onto the pump body. Anyone have this problem and is there a way to fix it? Started leaking just out of warranty so I can't take it back.
1) Take out the steering pump, it's easiest to remove the whole thing with the bracket so you don't have to remove the pulley.
2) Remove the high pressure valve where the high pressure hose is connected.
3) Remove the reservoir from the pump with a twisting motion.
4) Replace the O-ring on the pump and put the reservoir back on.
5) Put the high pressure valve back on with a new O-ring.
6) Put the pump back and re-install the high pressure hose with a new Teflon ring. You may have to purchase the Teflon ring from the dealer, to the tune of a buck a piece.
Thanks copper! Looks like I have to pull the A/C compressor to move it and the hoses out of the way. When I changed it last, I bought a pulley tool, but it is still a beast to get off. Once I have the A/C out of the way I will see if I can get it out without pulling the pulley. Seems like last time I did it, I couldn't get the pulley quite clear of the radiator or something. Right now I am cleaning the IAC valve, as I am having the "howling noise", "vacuum cleaner" noise syndrome going on! Several other threads have addressed this. So while I am under the hood I am taking a close look the the ps pump. Thanks again!
