Question Quiet 6.0

My 03/03 often gets super quiet at stop lights etc. RPM does not change just the routine cackle of the engine seems to disappear. Normal sound returns the second I hit the accel. Is this normal ? Anyone else experiencing this? Should I worry ??

Since I used to have a 7.3......I have to turn down the radio to hear my 6.0

I have an XLT Single Cab carpet delete, but the guy in a compact car can hear the 6.0 when I drive over them.....lol...just kidding

Agreed. When the wife heard the reduced sound level, she thought trading was a great idea. Little did she know.......

I told her that the Predator and K&N FIPK would make mine quieter, She said it didn't work. I told her the conputer had to learn it's new components, that in time she would notice it getting quieter.

I plan on keeping this truck until she becomes more hard of hearing.

Mine got a lot quieter when I changed to Mobil 1.

I park mine next to a friend that has a 2002 Dodge Cummins. I believe his is very slightly quieter at idle but louder driving off.

There is a big difference between idle and normal drive. But it doesn't do it all the time? Not sure if I should worry or not.

If you have the original programming with Pilot Injection (PI) it is the PI that makes it quiet. On later software revisions, they removed the PI and used the EGR at idle to quiet things down. No, it is normal.

The Truck has been flashed 3x. Last update 10-03. I assume one of those should have removed (PI). Thanks for the response.

Yep, the Oct flash would have done it. It is your EGR that is help quiet it down. Disconnect it. You are burning your own exhaust. Sort of like drinking your own bathwater!

If it gets "super quiet" like you said, you may have an EGR going bad...like someone says, just unplug the dang thing. I did about a week ago and my mileage has definitely gone up a little bit, plus it's supposedly healthier on the engine. Since you have an early 03 (same month as mine), you probably still have the throttle body plate inside that needs to be removed when you can. I have one, but haven't had the guts yet to try it. See the sticky about EGR / Throttle Body plate at the top of this forum.

Mines an 06-03 and doesn't have the plate. It runs fine without it. Check mu gallery for the power numbers with the Predator. It's a Monster!

HHHMMM, now that you mention it ....
every once in a while my idle WOULD quiet down - even my wife commented on it... and she's like could care less about the Ex except that she wants it for her !!!!

but ever since I disconnected the egr - it's not done that !!!!

Another good reason to disconnect it

I have a 05/04 Supercrew with the 6.0. It also does the little trick at stop lights where it gets really quiet too where you almost think it is not running if the tach didn't tell you it was. Since this has started I have noticed a big drop in my MPG from and avg of 17 to around 14. I mentioned this to my service rep and he just said that it was nothing to worry about. My truck now has 4500 miles on it so far and other than the funny noise I love it.
