Leaking Power Steering Gear

I have a 1977 F-250. There is power steering fluid gushing from the input shaft on the steering gear. How can I fix this without replacing the entire gear?

there is a seal behind the top plate. you have to take the old seal out and take it to ford or a good industrial seal supply to get it.

I bought a seal kit from Autozone or Advance... can't remember specifically right now. It comes with the input shaft and pitman shaft seals and washers for less than 20 bucks. I decided to go ahead and fully remove the steering box from the truck, completely dissemble and reassembled it, then reinstalled. Pretty big job but I feel alot better knowing exactly the condition it is in. I would think that in order to replace the input seal while still in the truck, you might have to pull the steering column to get it out of the way. You then would have to detach the knuckle holding the rag joint coupling on. Once you know hae unrestricted access to the top of the sterring gear, you can see the "top plate" or retaining washer-like plate that secures the seal. Since I completey dismantled mine, I am not sure how hard it is to remove the seal with the input shaft still in place. If you can do that, then all you have to do is lube up the new one, tap it gently into place then replace everything in reverse order.

Good luck!
