Folks,
Got a '92 bronco with 302 and 180k on the odometer. After the truck has been exposed to rain, the transmission (eod4) shifts hard(almost slamming into gear)and the truck has hesitation issues. Give the truck a day or so, it runs/shifts just fine and is a enjoyable vehicle again (except for 13mpg). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
The cheapest and simplest thing to check would be the electrical connection from the tranny to the E.E.C. Make sure it is plugged in all the way, and check the wires for problems. Pull the plug on the tranny (elect. plug) and inspect the connection, and apply some di-electric grease( any auto parts store) on the terminals and plug it back in and see what happens. At the very least it will give you a reason for hitting the puddles!
my suggestion is to go under the truck and unplug the MLPS. clean the terminals with some contact cleane and put some dielectric grease on the terminals and plug it back in. that should cure your problem.and yes i do know that i said the same as alsair but i ,we, think that is the problem.
Mine was the MLPS, like the other guy just said. I'd be driving and out of the blue it would just start slamming it into gear. I ended up replacing mine, but several people have said they just took it apart and cleaned it real good. Myabe try that first, but I'm almost certain it's the MLPS.
In fact, the TSB for this says it's due to contamination by water, etc.
The part is about 50 bucks from ford, and takes about an hour to install. the trick is getting the thing adjusted right with buying the tool, but that's easy too.
Best 50 bucks I ever spent on the truck considering the before and after results!
Mine's a '92 also.
I don't know about you but I have been experinceing the same or similar issue with my e40d. Every time it happens my overdrive light flashes on and off but for now until can tear it down and rebuild it I just fire it up trun overdrive off and no problem if I leave it on then gotr issues, leave it for about and hour or two and no problem again from what little I know about the operation of auto transmissions this seems to be due to overdrive band getting hot and when gets hot and engages any gear is a solid hook up with overdrive off this band doesn't get hot and no prooblem. But just check the simple stuff first. I my case small stuff doesn't seem to be the answer, so will just rebuild it (yes I do have experience with rebuilding the transmissions). In case anyone is wondering.
I still can't figure this out. It isn't the mlps, a new one did not help and I can't find fault with the wiring or the conection. What could get wet from this truck sitting out in the rain ( just parked in the driveway) that would effect it's transmission performance? Computer issue? As I said before, the it runs great after a dry day or two. I'm lucky this is a pleasure vehicle and not my daily driver!
