I had my 54 painted in a local shop a year ago. Since then, I have returned it twice to have bubbles removed. One bubble was on the hood (3/4" wide)and several bubbles recently appeared on top of the cab (1/4" wide). The paint shop guys are reporting that the bubbles are occurring over bondo repairs. Their method of repairing each bubble is to remove the effected paint, apply a sealer and reapply the basecoat color. Then tha entire section is sprayed with a new coat of clear. They are doing this under warranty. But my one year warranty just ran out. Has anybody else had this problem, and will it continue? I'm hoping that after a year, this is all that's going to happen. John, sounds like impurities somewhere either in the prep stages or in the paint process, possibly moisture during painting, the paint dries never adhering to the surface, then over time with heating and cooling it lifts and creating a bubble. If you lift the bubble off How far down does it go ?? To the primer ? All the way to the filler ? Doesn’t sound good…
Mike, I did not break the skin of the paint to see if the primer stuck or not. From the way they described it, The primer was not adhering to the bondo. John

Mike is right. Any number of issues could be involved. A couple of things that popped into my mind when you mentioned filler where...
Too much hardener in the filler, resulting in hot spots.
Not enough hardener or improperly mixed filler, resulting in an incomplete cure.
Filler exposed to moisture before painting.
Diagnosing paint problems is not a clear science. There
can be many reasons for any given problem. They
generally fall into improper preperation, improper mixing
or application or sometime product failure. Get ahold
of the factory rep for the paint you have used and
go from there. Most factories want to know if there are
problems showing up in the field.
Thanks for the input guys. I got the truck back yesterday and it looks as good as new. Since the paint is a year old, I hope that is the end of the bubbles. John
