93 Explorer

I just purchased a 93 Explorer and was wondering what kind of gas mileage I should expect, I went through one tank already and got about 13 mpg, that was a mix of hwy and city driving. Since then I have changed the oil, spark plugs and air cleaner. Another question is I replaced what apears to be a resistor of some type for the blower switch, it was located on under the hood on the heater core box, I was wondering if this is a common problem with them. My blower would only work on high until I replaced this part. One last question, I looked at my tires and they are 235/75 R15, the vehicle calls for 225/70 R15 how much will the bigger tires affect my speedomter? Thanks

My '92 gets low teens city and high teens highway.
I've never heard of anyone having problems with that resistor.
When I got my '92, it had 31X10.5R15 on it. To check the speedometer, I would use my gps to tell me the true speed and then I compared it with what the speedo showed. I also drove 10 miles down the highway and checked the odometer. With the 31's, my odometer and speedometer were off by about 10% (the odometer would show nine miles when I'd actually driven 10).
After you determine how far off it is, it can be adjusted by replacing the speedometer/vehicle speed sensor input gear in the transmission/transfer case. You get a gear with a different number of teeth than you already have. It's really easy to do, and only costs about $10.

I have a 91 4.0 2WD and get slightly better mileage than low to high teens but generally agree with the values stated. This is a rather heavy and blocky shaped vehicle so it is to be expected.

On the subject of the blower motor resistor pack, I have had several of them fail in various ford vehicles over the years. The basic design has not changed since the late 50's or 60's (I think) The problem you described is caused by a failure of (what appears to be) either a diode or thermistor in series with the resistor windings. This device gets hot and opens up allowing the fan to run only on high speed where the device is not in the power circuit. This problem can easily be fixed by removing the device and soldering a hard wire across it. I have NEVER had any problems doing this and have saved some bucks by denying the Ford Parts robber barrons of a sale or two.

Now I know I will get howels from some of the crowd about defeating a so called "safety device". Well if it is so desperately needed, then why is it not in the circuit on the High blower setting?

I was getting about 15 and I thought that was bad.... I read in another post that if your temperature is running low then your computer will justify for the low temp. by enriching the fuel mixture so I would suggest putting in a new high quality 195 degree thermostat. I just bought one and I am waiting to put it in. I am currently having my starter re-built (not-related) so it is second on my list. I hope this helps you out!!

Seeing as how im too lazy to actually do the math but in my 93 2WD 5spd. Im getting around 250 miles in the city on a 3/4 of a tank of gas and on the highway im getting close to 400miles... I know that city milage could be a lot better but i tend to have lead foot.

Our 1992 Averages about 16.. Every Weekday we drive 4 miles dirt (40mph), 7 miles 2 lane blacktop (65-70mph), 11 miles @ 80 mph, 4 miles @ 70mph, 3 miles @ 60mph, then 3 miles in town..

If we do 75 on the freeway instead of 80 our mileage goes up to 17.

Recently our average has been 15 and this is with towing 500lbs to work, and 2300lbs from work every 2 days..

Our 1992 has 253k miles on it, with an Auto Tranny (which doesn't help), 4x4, 4" lift, 32" tires with 4.10 gears.

A Manual tranny should help mileage a bit, so will having 4x2 instead of 4x4 and with lower speed limits (it is 75 our our way and 55 when on the freeway in town.. and even 50 in town some places) it should also get better mileage..
