Ok Here Goes........picked Up A 1986 Ford F350 Dually........motor Is Toast.................friend Has A 7.3 Out Of A 88 F250.......will The 7.3 Bolt To The Same Trans As The 6.9........and Is There Anything Else I Need To Do With This Conversion.....thanks
yes im almost possitive it will, i put a 6.9 into an 89 f250 with a 7.3 as for what else is different i think the fuel delivery is a bit changed thats all i can help you with sorry
Should work man. Get a turbo system for it and hang on. Be sure to use cooling system additive to stop cavitation. NAPA or heavy truck shops have it. Caterpillar calls it nalcool.
I've replaced a few 6.9s with junkyard 7.3s. Don't remember having any problems at all. Except for one of the junkyard motors that knocked a little too much.
The glow plugs in the 7.3 are a new style plug with a stud connector.
The 86 6.9 plugs have a spade connector.
You need the glow plug wiring harness and controller off the 7.3 to use the new and better glowplug system. This means a little wiring to do on the right inner fender to hook the old style truck connector to the new style engine wiring harness.
Or you can retrofit the old 6.9 style plugs and controller on the 7.3 and then it plugs right in.
The water seperator is on the firewall on the 86 and on the fuel filter by the alternator on the 7.3
Check to make sure the 7.3 has V belts to run the AC, vacuum pump, alternator, water pump and power steering pump like your 86 has. A serpintine belt motor has these things in different places which would be an extra hastle to hook up.
Everything else bolts right up. Did the 7.3 turbo to my 86, man what a nice driving truck now.
