casting numbers
I need help with casting numbers for the flywheel(standard shif) and harmonic balancer on a 1974 302. I'am trying to find out why the engine vibrates. Having the casting numbers would help me determin if the previous owner might have installed the wrong flywheel or balancer. Any help would be appreceated. This 65 f100 needs to be going down the road a little smoother than it does. THANKS james

Not sure about casting numbers, other than C means '60's, D means 70's, etc. Number after first letter is year, so D4XXX would denote '74. I had a 69 302 that shook badly. I tried all sorts of harmonic balancers, then a Ford guy said, "How big is the counterweight on the flywheel?" There was none! It was a 6 cyl flywheel someone else put on. You'll see a noticeable 'lump' on the flywheel if its the correct one. Some fords are 28 oz., some are 50 oz., some internally balanced. Sorry I don't know which yours is. Mine shook so bad (before I got it) that it wallowed out the dowel holes on the bell housing!

Thanks FLgorgoyle for replying to my post. I think you are right on the nail head about the 6 cylinder flywheel because this truck originaly had a 6 cylinder engine before a privious owner replaced it with a 74 302. I've been to three different Ford dealerships in my area and none of them can come up with a part number for the correct flywheel for this engine. From what information I've been able to gather is to just get a 28oz. 302 flywheel with the correct diameter ring gear. Hopefully next week I will be able to remove the flywheel and solve this problem. THANKS AGAIN James
