Fan clutch replacement Q's

1991 F-150, 5.0

MY fan clutch is toast. A friend is encourging me to replace it myself (as opposed to a shop). He pointed out a half dozen or so bolts and says it's a easy, 10 minute job. Sure I'd like to save a buck (who wouldn't?), but right now I have more money than time. I don't want to get into the job and burn up a half a day.

1) Is this an easy swap?

2) If so, why do they sell fan clutch wrenches? Do I need special wrenchs?

3) Whether I have a shop do it or do it myself, is one fan clutch as good as any other provided it's made to fit my engine?

thanks

There are a couple of different ways fan clutches attach to the fan and water pump. My '87 5.0 Mustang was an easy change with common tools. The fan bolted to it, and it bolted to the water pump. My truck, on the other hand, the clutch attaches via a large, single stud, requiring a large wrench (and accordingly large hammer) to remove. You should be able to look at it and get a good idea of whether its within your comfort zone. Alternatively, you could ask your friend to "show you how" to change it, i.e. he does it and you supply beer....

Just did mine on my 95 F-150, 5.8. Setup is the same as a 5.0. Take the 2 bolts out that hold the fan shroud in (8mm wrench/socket). Take the 4 bolts that hold the clutch to the water pump (10 mm I believe). CAREFULLY remove fan and clutch (watch radiator). Remove the 4 bolts that hold the fan to the old clutch. Installation is the reverse of the above. Piece of cake. Part is about 60 bucks.

Hope this helps.
