With a 195 deg thermostat and stock flex fan my truck ran from one end of normal to the other. It did not seem to have a rhyme or reason compared to the air temp. With the electric it runs almost straight up to a little to the right.
With the electric fan and a 16-foot utility trailer loaded with about 1800 board feet of wood. I did see the tem gauge go to the high side of normal on a 5-mile long 7% grade. The air temp was 80 deg that day.
As long as the stock gauge doesn't go past the A I wouldn't worry too much. Yes it's normal for it to run a little warmer until the thermostate opens and coolant starts flowing through.
i topped off the coolant today and i can tell when the thermostat opens up on the guage it droped down the temp pretty quick
it ran cooler today around the O in Normal
thanks for the help
also how many rpm's am i turning at 70 it has 3.55 gears
1:1 tranny
I replaced my radiator on Monday. It was running normal Between the R and M but when I put a load on it it would run up to the A. It never got past the A, but that to close for comfort for me.
With the new Radiator and waterpump, it runs below the N all the time unless under a heavy load (wednsday I pulled a fairly heavy trailer loaded with pipe) and it got half way up the N and that was it. I spent 150 on the Rad and 30 on the waterpump.

same here..usually no more that 1/4 way up the dial. if it's a hot day in stop and go she'll hit the R in normal.
Before dumping the $$ into a radiator, double check the underhood wiring to the temp sender. I suddenly lost oil pressure a few months back and freaked out thinking my low mile 300 was heading south. Few minutes later the gauge jumped back to normal, then dropped again. Poked around and discovered the wires to both the oil pressure and temp senders were rotten in a few places. Insulation hard and cracked, not much in the way of copper left. Ran some new wire and now all is back to normal.
When I first got my truck (last August), I was crusing down the road with the Ac on and the gauge was up past the " L " on normal. Kinda made me think it was little too hot for my liking, so I installed a 160 degree thermostat and a new fan clutch (a hayden). On the fan clutch are two settings where the little thermostatic spring can go. There are two notches for the spring, one is the factory setup but if you pop the spring out of the notch and rotate to the other notch the fan clutch will come on a lot sooner. My truck on a 90 degree day at 80 percent plus humidity with the Ac on, never goes past the "N" even sitting in heavy traffic and the a\c is nice and cold. In the winter I put the spring on the fan clutch back to the factory setting.
another thing
when cold i have oil pressure to the a in normal
when it gets warm and i stop at a light the pressure falls off the guage i am thinking oil pump but i am going to install a real guage first. does the oil pump make any sounds when it is about to go out?
It's normal to have a pressure drop from cold to hot...but not that much. Could be that your oil level is low [sure you've checked], needs changing REALLY bad, crank bearings are shot, or the pump is weak. Don't think I've ever heard of an oil pump squealing on it's deathbed like water pumps often do. Oil pumps usually die a slow death from wear in the gears and seals going bad. Good plan though, let a real gauge tell you the story then go from there.
i got a real guage tonight
about the crank bearings
when i get up to where i shift it sounds a little like a diesel from under the hood is this normal? or are the bearings shot
i check my oil constantly more than once a day
if i have to replace my oil pump i might as well do the crank bearings while i have the pan off.
can you change the bearings without taking the crank out?
