Question Axle codes info conflict

I have two different sets of axle ratio codes, and unfortunately they don't always match up:

Code "19", one chart says 3.55 ratio, the other 4.11 [big difference]
Code "23" appears as both 3.31 and 3.54
Code "16" as both 3.50 and 3.73

Anyone know which #'s are right...or both? Did the codes change over the years, by vehicle, or with the axle type [9", 8.8", Dana 6x]? I'd just spin the rear ends I'm looking at to verify each one, but that's very impractical the way they're situated.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

19 = 3.55 open diff on later model trucks (at least '92 and later, probably starts around '80). What year and model truck are you working on?

This is an '83 E100 van with the 300 straight six, C6 tranny. It has a 3.00 gear right now [code 14, ford 9"] which is great for the highway but makes me slow to 30mph going uphill while towing. Looking to drop the ratio to the 3.50 -ish range for the least $$ possible. My local pick-ur-part salvage yard has several potential donor vehicles but many have bent drive shafts from being move around with a forklift, which prevents an easy "spin the wheels" ratio check.

Would prefer to just do a pumpkin swap, but the Ford 9" rears have been picked over quite a bit. Several of the late model ['88-'91] vans have a code 19 Ford 8.8" rear end, but I've seen "code 19" listed as both 3.55 and 4.11, and none are spin-checkable w/o dropping the driveshafts. 3.55 should be just right, but I fear a 4.11 would be too low and kill my mileage [no overdrive]. All these vans have a code "T" transmission, is that the AOD or E4OD??? Forgot to look at the shift indicators when I went "shopping" the other day.

"T" is an AOD. My '90 F150 is code 19 and is a 3.55 open. Hope that helps.
