On just a bit of my chrome (especially the side mirrors) I have what looks like a little bit of a gritty look. All the scrubbing won't touch it. I haven't use a chrome polish as of yet and was wondering if that will take the gritty look out or is there something else?
If it's what I think it is, you've got serious under-layer corrosion with the chrome. The "grit" you're seeing is the corrosion pushing up from the base metal, right through the chrome. Maybe someone else here knows how to correct it, but I sure don't. I've always called it chrome's "kiss of death." Any body have any solutions?
Jeff, I was thinking it was just the opposite. Some of the chrome and stainless on our dump truck has a gritty look, but I know it's kind of a lightly sandblasted effect from too much time on dirt roads and in the rock pits. The stainless can be fixed by much elbow grease and polishing, there isn't a thing to be done with the chrome.
David, without some close-up photos, it's hard to determine whether your problem stems from road wear (surface) or bad workmanship (under side of chrome), but it don't sound too good either way.
i've always heard that using coke on crome as a rubbing compound might work.... never tired it but i have heard it before i dont kow if it will help or not
