2004 Explorer Drive "Clunk"

I have a new Explorer XLT 4.0 with 4WD with the 5 sp auto. I notice the following symptom:

- from a stop
- steering wheel turned to one side or the other (when pulling out onto a road or maneuvering in a parking lot)
- put into drive
- give gas to accelerate

I get a clunk (sometimes).. it sounds like a late engagement into drive or something to do with the the 4x4 auto feature that this car has (I recall choppiness on my 94 XLT 4x4 when in 4wd hi turning at low speeds).

I am not sure if this is normal or I have a problem that I need to bring it in for.

Ha anyone ever seen this?

Chris

I have something similar. It's not fixed so all this probably isn't much help.

I've been getting a slight hesitation and clunk when accelerating from a stop and also the reverse when coming to a stop. It seems like you mention, like something engaging just before the car starts moving. For me it's only noticeable at a medium acceleration rate.

I've had to the dealer three times for it. I think they twiddled with the servos in the transfer case each time but that hasn't fixed it.

Mines a 98 Explorer 4.0 liter V6 4X4.

I have a 2004 Explorer as well that had the same symptoms - an occasional clunk when applying the gas after slowing down or driving around a parking lot at slower speeds. Anyway, the dealer said they had an updated program for the computer that controls the transmission. I have noticed no more clunking and MUCH better shifting all around. It was well worth it.
