I've read with with encouragement from others that there may be a means to end this cursed thing from staying on. It's like the darn car has a computer virus. Anyway my 96'rs history. The car has been rear ended twice. Once a year ago in August 2000 and another this past August 2001.Both times it was light damage sustaining about $800 damage. Mainly bumper, exhasut hangers, muffler or pipe.
About a week or two past this second accident the CHK ENG LT (CEL) started coming on . Sometimes it would come on then go off. Once traveling we went about 300 yds after starting and the engine choked and stalled. Was difficult to restart. It did however restart. I've had this beast to my local garage. Scanner revealed nothing I was told. As of last week I had it to a Ford garage to be examined. I was told to replace the DPFE and the O2 sensors.Do a complete tune up (plugs ,wires fuel ,air filter) and replace the serpentine belt.
Did all that. CEL still on. What else should I look for? Could the rear ending have cause something? I just read an article where a transmission can cause similiar problems as well for an engine.
Ihave read about renting the scanners or buing. Thinking about it.
You did clear codes on computer after performing plugs/O2 sensors etc? Otherwise I would concentrate on rear of vehicle. Crimped exhaust pipe, Loose/damaged fuel pump connection etc. Good luck.
OBD II is kinda of a squirrels nest to understand . There are problems that are manufacturerer specific that a Generic OBD II scanner wont reveal . If a CEL is present & the Generic OBD II scanner wont find a problem then it may be that only the Ford NGS ( Next Generaion Star Tester ) Needs to be used . DPFE Sensor problems are very common . Ford O2 Sensors seem to get to a point where they just die , some O2 Sensors fade away slowly . The Ford Mechanics likely noticed sone cracks in the drive belt , Its better to replace it now then when it breaks & flies away when you really need to get some place .
