ok im getting a engine rebuilt from a machine shop for 2100 including labor. i was told by someone that i will lose hp. how is this? i asked the person doing it for me and he said if anything i should gain more hp than the stock engine was at. the only possible way he said it would loss hp is if a place just threw the engine together or i had some inexperinced person do it. also this same person told me i was getting ripped off that his mom got a new engine for her 88' bronco for 1k. arent the Explorers and Broncos totally different? i thought 2100 for everything was great and it has a 2yr warranty on it too. thxs for the help!

What labor are you referring to? Engine assembly or does that include removal and replacement? The price you pay depends on exactly what is being done. For example, will the valves, springs, camshaft and lifters be reused or replaced with new stuff? Some shops that sell cheap motors will reuse the old components. Are there any threads that need repair (such as in the exhaust manifold), will the exhaust manifolds be ground flat? I could go on and on. Just for reference, a rebuilt 4.0 from Ford costs about $1750 and a new one was about $2250. I don't think that included accessories, manifolds, injectors and similar items. Depending on what the machinist does to your motor, you may end up with an engine that is of better quality than the original.
>i was told by someone that i will lose hp.
The change in power will not be noticeable unless the engine is modified for increased power. In theory, you should have slightly more power because you have slightly more displacement from an overbore (assuming this was done). The most noticeable gain in power will be just because you have a fresh motor, but don't expect more than it came with when new.
>also this same person told me i was getting ripped off that his mom got a new engine for her 88' bronco for 1k.
Was this a short block or long block? Regardless, it's an apples to oranges comparison. I would be suspicious of any complete motor for $1000. Even a new small block Chevy (which is cheaper than any Ford motor) will run at least $1200 for something decent. Judging on the prices I've seen for rebuilt and new 4.0L motors, $2100 doesn't sound too bad. Again, it all depends on what is being done.
what the machinist told me is that whatever needs to be replaced will be replaced and that if something needs to be resmoothed it will be done. the 2100 is with labor included. he said for the engine it was 1700. i went to his shop to check out my car today and he had taken the old engine out and was disembling the engine. as far as the bronco goes i have no idea what this person had put in there. this person has an 83' so im assuming it is easier to rebuild since the computer technology wasnt that advanced. the exhaust on my X is staying the same for now. i know this engine will run tons better now since before i gave it to him i was only running with 4 cylinders. i was just trying to see if this was a good deal since this is my first car and i really havent expereince on this matter like others. thanks for the help.
