Gonna call it the "why" pipe...

...as in "why" on Earth would anyone design such a ****-poor thing and put it on a vehicle. Smashing two pipes together so that they form a circle and squeezing these two "D"-shaped pipes into another is NOT my idea of a good design.

So, is it just the '03-'04s, just the '04s, or just mine with such a hideous POS design for the exhaust Y-pipe?

My guess is that if it doesn't improve economy or performance, and is not cheaper to do, then it must reduce engine and exhaust noise. Those are the things important in the market place.

Looking at the globs of welding needed to close the holes and prevent leaks, sure doesn't seem like it'd be cheaper than using a real Y-pipe. And I don't see how crushing the exhaust pipes to half their normal size could improve performance. I think you might be on to something with the noise issue though. After all, can't be much noise when such a small amount of exhaust actually flows?

My 03 has the same crappy design. Looks like they didn't fire the guy who designed the V10 "why-pipe", Neal...they just transferred him!

At least the V10 pipes were round.

It appears the poor fellow was in an accident and now has even more brain damage than when he was on the Super Duty team.
