4x4 doen´t work on my ford explorer 94 eddie bauer. I want to fix it but i don´t know which are the steps to find out where is the problem.
Please send me your experience about this and also some pictures including the disarm process of the hubs and/or transfer case
If you have electronic 4x4 shift (push button instead of shift lever. just about all explorers I've seen have electronic shift) it could easily be the electric shift motor. They commonly go bad. For details on cleaning/checking/replacing see [link: www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html| www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html] under transfer case.
my mom had the automatic 4x4 fixed on the explorer while it was still under warranty. the part alone i think was near a thousand dollars canadian but maybe that includes labour.. don't remember wasn't mine then. and now it's going bad again... makes grinding noise when i slow to a stop... don't want to think what it's doing at high speed. i would replace the 4x4 and low range buttons in the dash... with a nice radio
then the transmission fluid started leaking all over the place cuz it runs to a radiator or something and the pipes rusted thru. note: they rusted at every point a copper pipe went into a rubber hose. maybe the factory neglected to coat the tips with whatever before putting on the hoses.
i would first jack the whole truck up then get a spoter to help with the truck in gear look underneeth to see if the drive shaft spins to the front if it doesn't refer to the above. if it dos check to make sure your front axles move. if don't there could be a eletric thing in the front axle somewhere. I ran across a GM blazer that was like that. also check your fuses sometimes its the simple things that cause problems.
