Stripped Oil Pan Plug

I installed my Fumoto valve in my '03 7.3 PSD this weekend. When the oil finished draining out I started to screw the valve in but had difficulty. It felt like the nut inside was loose. I finally got it started and screwed it down and just as it got tight enough it got loose agian. I tightened it down again and stopped bofore it let loose. After talking with Ford, it appears that the welded on nut inside the pan was being held on by one tack and I probably broke that weld. The nut is getting tight putting pressure on the spot welds, but if I go too far, it falls off the welds. Ford told me that they would have to remove the oil pan and weld the nut back on. Ford then told me that the oil pan removal requires the engine to be removed. Ithink that is a little much just to get the valve installed.

Has anyone had this problem and know of an easy fix? I wouldn't mind permanently mounting the Fumoto valve to the oil pan, if brass can be welded to steel. Thanks for the help.

Good question. Ford says it is covered if the weld broke loose, but not if the threads are stripped. If the threads are stripped they would install a self tapping plug. It looks like Fumoto offers their product in self tapping versions as well. That looks like the best idea if the threads are stripped.
