Automatic Transmission oil
If this is a DIY project:
You don't tell us anything about what kind of truck you have so this is kind of generic.
Get the truck up off the ground.
A good place to start is with the transmission sump pan. There will be about 2-3 quarts of fluid in the sump with the filter. Clean or replace the filter, replace gasket, and reassemble.
On the bottom of the bell housing where it tapers out to meet the flywheel you should see an inspection plate. Remove that and rotate the torque converter found behind the plate until a plug is found. Removing the plug will allow the remainder of the fluid that can be removed (without taking the transmission off the truck) to be drained. Be ready to capture a lot of fluid. I think you will find up to about 7-8 more quarts of fluid here. Reinstall the plug, close the inspection plate and return the truck to earth.
Refill the transmission with the type of fluid recommended for your transmission (again, you do not say what kind of equipment you have so look at the placards on your truck or in the manuals).
Start the engine and with foot FIRMLY on the brake pedal move the selector lever through all the gears. Then move between drive and reverse a couple more times before putting it back in park. Get out and check the fluid level again. Top off as required. Go for a short drive (around the block?) reversing at some point. Recheck the fluid level and top off as required. Check the sump pan for leaks.
Drive happy....
Best thing if you want to 'purge' the system is to use one of the quick change oil shops, Quick Lube, Jiffy Lube, ect. They will charge you about 100 bucks to break in to the transmission fluid cooler lines at the Radiator and run a purge of fresh Mer-Con tranny fluid through it. You might get a special at $69.95
Best regards
