my 87 f250 sometimes will start with the key, sometimes it wont. when I get in it and turn the key for a couple seconds to start it, it will roll over. Now if it does'nt start the first time I hit the key , it wont roll over when I try to start it again. everything inside the cab, (lights, guages, radio, etc.) goes off like it should when I turn the key to start. When it does this I can go out under the hood and use a jumper wire, (from hot post on battrey, to "s" terminal on solinoid) with the key in run position it will start. I've replaced starter(was dragging anyway), ignition switch(under dash), solinoid on firewall, positve battery cable. I've learned to hold the key the first time till it starts, but would like to fix this problem. looking for any suggestions on how to cure this problem.
I had the same problem with an old Mustang I had...replaced everything you did and it ended up being the wire that goes from the key ignition to the terminal on the solinoid.
Hope you get it taken care of, I know its a pain in the A$$
Try a fatter positive cable and more ground wires.
You said you replaced the ignition switch. The problem could also be in the key switch assembly (not likely tho cause you can jump wire it). Coulda' got a bad seloniod switch too.
