My 97 Explorer 4.0 has stalled a dozen times over three years. Each time it has been while driving up hill on mountainous roads. (Particularly nasty since I live in the Rockies.)It has happened in both hot and cold weather and when the engine has been both hot and cold. The "check engine" light does not come on; the dealer can find nothing in the computer "black box." Fuel filters have been changed. The stalling is too infrequent to ever get to happen on demand for a mechanic or while on a monitor.
Does anyone have a possible solution or experience a similar problem?
did you experience any clicking sound from the engine prior to stalling?
I have had a history of my car cranking but no fire, off and on for a few months, and the shop was unable to duplicate the problem and the codes read fine, but the other day.
I heard a clicking sound and then my engine stalled and wouldn't start since. so I had it towed to the shop and they said over the phone.
that the air/filter sensor (something to do with elevation) was clogged and that each time I tried to cranck it over the engine was telling itself to add more fuel. Not sure if this is the problem but it may help.
Oh and a mechanic friend said, and he isn't sure if we have a safetly impact switch, but anyways he has found on some cars the the switch and got set, and that is why it wouldn't start or it stalled, it was hitting just right.
